Democrats flip North Carolina Senate seat as 2026 US election results roll in

2026 US election results were still being tallied after polls closed on Tuesday, November 3, with Democrats opening the count with a pickup in North Carolina’s US Senate race and early leads in both chambers of Congress. The vote put 435 House seats, 37 Senate seats and 36 governorships on the ballot; more than 210 million Americans were eligible to vote.

North Carolina was the first named Senate flip: Democrat Roy Cooper won the race and turned the seat from Republican to Democratic. Moneycontrol reported that Democrats also won Senate races in Georgia and New Hampshire as counting continued, while India TV News and The Times of India both said Democrats took an early lead in the House and Senate and won four governor’s seats.

At a glance

  • Democrat Roy Cooper won North Carolina's US Senate race, flipping a Republican-held seat.
  • Democrats also won Senate races in Georgia and New Hampshire as counting continued.
  • Indian-American Democrat Suhas Subramanyam won reelection to the US House in Virginia's 10th Congressional District.
  • The ballot covered 435 House seats, 37 Senate seats and 36 governorships for over 210 million eligible Americans.
  • Poll closures began at 6 pm ET in Indiana and Kentucky, followed by Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and most of Florida at 7 pm.

First returns from Virginia and North Carolina

The first race result came from Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, where Indian-American Democrat Suhas Subramanyam won reelection to the US House, Hindustan Times reported. Cooper’s win in North Carolina followed quickly and was described by News18 as a flip of a Republican-held Senate seat. Those results gave Democrats two kinds of returns at once: retention in one Democratic-held House seat and conversion of a Senate seat that had been on the Republican side.

Senate flips in North Carolina, Georgia and New Hampshire

Moneycontrol’s live tally listed Senate wins for Democrats in North Carolina, Georgia and New Hampshire as counting continued for House, Senate and governor seats. Times Now also reported Ossoff’s victory in Georgia, and NDTV reported that a Georgia senator who called Trump a “failed president” won reelection. The Georgia result therefore reinforced the same pattern as North Carolina: a Democratic pickup or hold in a Senate contest that Republicans could not afford to lose if they wanted to keep Congress. The North Carolina seat came with a concrete change in control, not merely a margin.

Poll closing times and when counting started

Mint reported that polling stations began to close in Indiana and Kentucky at 6 pm ET (2300 GMT), with Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and most of Florida following at 7 pm. Because several key Senate races sat in states where polls closed early, returns could move fast; News18 said projections in clear-cut races could emerge within minutes of polls closing, with the first results expected around 5:30 AM IST. That timetable helps explain why North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia produced named outcomes before the national count was complete.

House, governor and Louisiana races on the ballot

Beyond the Senate, the midterm ballot included all 435 House seats and 36 governorships. Al Jazeera’s early count summary said Democrats were ahead as the vote count got under way, and two Indian news agencies said the party had grabbed four governor seats by the early tally. Louisiana added another Senate race to the night: The Times of India said the November 3 ballot in Louisiana featured Letlow versus Davis for Cassidy’s Senate seat. Moneycontrol also reported that Americans voted in races meant to decide control of Congress, with Trump backing key Republican candidates, turnout rising in parts of Ohio and voting disruptions reported.

Republican response after early Democratic surge

Trump had tried to shape the night before it began. Times Now reported that the former president was stepping up campaign rallies to boost Republican turnout, with under 24 hours left until the November 3 ballot. The early 2026 US election results nevertheless cut the other way: Democrats flipped North Carolina, took Georgia and New Hampshire in Moneycontrol’s count, held Virginia’s 10th district through Subramanyam, and led in both chambers while also picking up four governor seats. Counting continued into the morning in Indian time, with several House, Senate and governor totals still open.
