Union Cabinet Approves Two-Year Extension for Agniveer Service Tenure

The Union Cabinet has approved a two-year extension to the service tenure for Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme, officially raising their total service period from four years to six years. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) announced the tenure extension, stating that willing recruits who are not immediately absorbed into the permanent cadre will be enrolled in the armed forces for an additional two-year stint rather than returning directly to civilian life after four years.
The policy update comes as the central government and the armed forces conduct an active review of the Agnipath military recruitment scheme. This review coincides with the first batch of Agniveers approaching the completion of their initial four-year service tenure. Under the original Agnipath policy framework, only 25% of candidates from each passing batch were selected for permanent absorption into the regular military cadre. The remaining 75% of recruits were expected to demobilise and transition back into civilian life after four years. With the Centre’s latest approval, those 75% of recruits who are not initially absorbed will now get an opportunity to serve for an additional two years in uniform.
Terms of the Two-Year Extension
Sources familiar with the development indicate that the government had been considering a two-year extension option specifically targeted at select recruits who do not make the cut for permanent cadre absorption during their initial four-year evaluation. The Chief of Defence Staff confirmed that willing ones among these recruits will be enrolled in the forces for the extended duration. The move provides the armed forces with extended operational service from already trained personnel while giving recruits two more years of military employment and service benefits before transitioning out of the armed forces.
The central government’s review of the Agnipath scheme was highlighted alongside other key Union Cabinet initiatives, including a ₹4,371 crore statistical revamp project and strategic pushes in the critical minerals sector. Even as executive and military leadership finalize the retention framework, standard induction drives across various defence zones are continuing as scheduled.
Army Recruitment Rally in Hyderabad
Alongside the decision on tenure extensions, recruitment drives for fresh entrants remain active on the ground. The Indian Army is set to conduct a recruitment rally for new Agniveer candidates in Hyderabad. The Hyderabad recruitment rally will evaluate prospective recruits through mandatory physical endurance tests, medical fitness examinations, and common entrance exams under standard military selection protocols.
As the first batch of recruits nears the end of its initial four-year contract, the central government and defence officials will determine the selection procedures for enrolling eligible and willing personnel into the new two-year extension window before their original service terms conclude.
