Andre Russell Retires From IPL and T20Is, Extends Nepal Premier League Stay

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has agreed to extend his stay in the Nepal Premier League 2026 by an extra match, pledging to return for the tournament’s next edition after steering Biratnagar Kings to a dramatic win. Playing in the 12th match of the season against Janakpur Bolts at Kirtipur on Tuesday, Andre Russell produced a starring performance to seal a two-run victory in a nail-biting final over. The fixture was initially slated to be his last appearance in the third NPL season, but the veteran power-hitter confirmed he would play one more game for the side before departing.

Farewell to International Cricket

The decision to prolong his stint in Nepal follows significant shifts in his international career. The 37-year-old recently called time on his T20I career, stepping down after the first two matches of the home series against Australia. Russell ends his international career with 84 T20I caps for the West Indies, scoring 1,078 runs and picking up 61 wickets. He was a vital member of the West Indies sides that lifted the T20 World Cup in both 2012 and 2016.

During his final innings on home soil at Sabina Park in Jamaica, Andre Russell received a guard of honour from both his West Indies teammates and the touring Australian team. He capped off his farewell home match by striking a 15-ball 36, including four sixes. In the third T20I at Perth, Russell and Sherfane Rutherford both crunched quickfire half-centuries, pushing the West Indies to a total of 220 for 6. Australia finished on 183 for 5 in response, giving the West Indies a 37-run consolation win while Australia clinched the series 2-1.

IPL Exit and Franchise Struggles

Russell also stunned fans by announcing his retirement from the Indian Premier League, coming just days after Kolkata Knight Riders released him ahead of the mini-auction. Having turned 35 while celebrating his birthday inside the KKR camp, he spent years as one of the franchise’s main match-winners. Following KKR’s IPL 2024 triumph, Russell featured in a social media video alongside teammate Sunil Narine, where the pair ended up in splits over an interview query asking, “Final match, you perform, what happening?”

Fitness issues weighed heavily on his final years. Cricket West Indies previously confirmed his exclusion from a series decider against Bangladesh due to a knee injury. His franchise career also saw squad reshuffles—at one point, James Vince was brought in to replace Eoin Morgan and was lined up to play in place of Russell, but a technical issue forced Russell into the side before he picked up an injury, prompting Carlos Brathwaite to join as his replacement. Russell now prepares for his final NPL appearance of the season before returning next year.
