Devon Conway ruled out of first India ODI with concussion

Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first One-Day International against India after suffering a concussion in a training-ground collision with teammate Matt Henry at Eden Park.

The incident happened on Tuesday, one day before New Zealand are due to face India in the opening ODI of the five-match series on Wednesday in Auckland. The left-handed opening batter felt the force of a collision with Henry, one of New Zealand’s fast bowlers, while the side was at practice. Multiple match reports said the injury was confirmed as concussion and that Conway will not play in the first fixture.

The injury lands at a tricky time for New Zealand’s batting plans. Senior batters Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra had already been ruled out of the ODI series before Conway was added to the list. The Times of India reported that Chapman is undergoing rehabilitation, while Rachin’s absence leaves another recognised batter unavailable for the series. Conway is the men’s latest injury setback rather than the first one.

Conway is an experienced operator in all three formats for New Zealand, so his absence is not a like-for-like omission. He opens the batting from the left-hand side and has been a senior member of the group. The series now starts with India facing a New Zealand XI whose lineup will be chosen without one of its established top-order batters.

Henry was also being checked after the same collision. News24’s match-day report said Matt Henry was under observation, which means New Zealand were managing two availability questions from the same training session. The reports did not say Henry was ruled out; they said he was under observation after the incident with Conway.

The first match is still scheduled for Eden Park on Wednesday against India. The only clarity available after practice on Tuesday was Conway’s status: he will not feature in that match. New Zealand’s selection headache has shifted from whether Conway would be doubtful for the series to how the batting order covers the opener’s absence for the opening fixture.

For Tuesday’s practice session itself, the sequence was straightforward. Conway and Henry were involved in a collision at Eden Park. Conway sustained a head injury that was reported as concussion. The left-hander was then ruled out of the first ODI, while Henry remained under observation. That is the extent of what the injury updates have confirmed so far.

India had a five-match ODI series against New Zealand on the schedule. The first opposition selection issue belongs to the host side, with Chapman and Rachin already unavailable before the week began. Conway’s loss adds a more prominent name to that list, because he is one of the senior batters who had been expected in the XI for the Auckland match.

New Zealand’s coaching staff will have to settle the opening batting combination before Wednesday’s toss. The concrete detail for fans is the confirmed absence: Conway will not play the first ODI against India at Eden Park after Tuesday’s collision. Matt Henry’s status remains the open question after he was kept under observation from the same training incident.
