The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) pumped ₹17,000 crore into equities during the first quarter of the fiscal year, pushing its exposure in stocks to 11.2 per cent of its investible corpus at June-end, an analysis by the HDFC Securities showed on Tuesday. The EPFO’s equity allocation is set against its total corpus, which stood at ₹16,09,000 crore as on March 31 this year, the fund reported.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) celebrated its 74th Foundation Day this week, marking 74 years of its role in India’s social security architecture. At the Delhi function, Union Labour and Employment Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya urged the organisation’s employees to focus on worker-centric innovations across domains, stressing that social security services must be built on compassion and trust. He called for accessible and humane reforms in the delivery of benefits to workers, according to an official PIB press note.
The EPFO has been on an investment ramp-up. It plans to establish rules for investing in alternative investment funds (AIFs) and is considering allocating up to 3 per cent of new annual accretions to AIFs, The Economic Times reported. Separate reports said the body is also preparing to invest in startups. These moves come on top of its equity purchases through the passive index funds and ETFs route.
The ₹17,000 crore infusion in equities during Q1 took stocks to 11.2 per cent of the EPFO’s investible corpus at June-end, the analysis showed. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had earlier said its corpus stood at ₹16,09,000 crore as of March 31 this year. The 11.2 per cent exposure works out to roughly ₹1.80 lakh crore at that corpus level.
Alongside the investment plans, the EPFO reminded members this week that all its PF services are free. The organisation cautioned subscribers against unauthorised third-party agents who have been charging fees for services that the EPFO provides at no cost, Business Today reported. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) also noted that the transfer claim process no longer needs the previous employer’s approval since 2025, and that KYC seeding with the Universal Account Number (UAN) has been streamlined by removing employer approval.
The EPFO has added PF balance, passbook and transaction details to WhatsApp, letting subscribers check their accounts on the messaging app, The Times of India reported. It is also preparing to roll out ‘EPFO 3.0’, a digital upgrade built around UPI-based withdrawals and settlement of claims within 72 hours, Business Today reported.
The EPFO extended the September 2026 PF filing deadline to October 31, moving it from October 15, following the revision of the PF wage ceiling, Live Mint reported. The extension applies to employers filing September 2026 provident fund returns and depositing contributions. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s (EPFO) Employees’ Enrolment Campaign 2026 also wound up on October 31, the last day for employers to register eligible workers, Newspoint reported.
At a Foundation Day event in Jammu, BJP MP Sat Sharma urged timely settlement of workers’ and pensioners’ provident fund and pension claims, and greater awareness of social security benefits, Mint reported.
On withdrawals, the EPFO’s rules allow members to pull out up to 100 per cent of their eligible provident fund balance, with conditions, Mint explained. For medical, education, marriage and housing needs, members can withdraw up to 75 per cent of their PF balance and are required to keep 25 per cent in the account, Outlook Money reported.
