Google extends voluntary buyouts to five more countries as AI costs pinch Alphabet

Google has taken its voluntary exit program global, extending buyout offers to five more countries after Alphabet came under pressure to show discipline in a cycle of heavy artificial intelligence spending.

Reuters reported from Zurich on Nov 4 that Alphabet’s Google had expanded employee buyout offers to several countries this year. The Google buyouts now cover Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland, according to reports. Mint framed the expansion as following a hiring spree, while Business Standard said Google protected hiring priorities in AI and cloud computing amid rising investment costs.

The offer is voluntary. Firstpost reported that Google is using the buyouts to reduce its workforce without layoffs, and NewsBytes said the expansion covers five additional countries as the company weighs significant AI investments against its payroll base.

Five countries added to exit offer

The five names in the international reports were Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The Times of India described the step as an expansion of voluntary exit packages to staff in five countries as Google reins in costs during its AI push. Times Now said Alphabet extended voluntary employee buyout offers to five countries as it increases investments in AI.

The South First reported that the move is part of the Sundar Pichai-led firm’s attempt to cut costs as it continues to spend heavily on artificial intelligence. The American Bazaar put the same shift in context: Google joined Microsoft in expanding employee buyouts as AI costs rise.

Hiring stays concentrated in AI and cloud

Business Standard and Firstpost both tied the buyout expansion to a clear internal priority: Google is restructuring its workforce while protecting hiring in AI and cloud computing. The reports do not give a headcount for the new offers, but they consistently describe the program as voluntary rather than a layoff wave.

Moneycontrol reported that the move comes amid growing investor concerns over heavy AI spending, which has weighed on Alphabet’s stock price. That is the tension inside the plan. Google wants to keep funding AI and cloud capacity while telling markets it can control costs elsewhere, without forcing people out the door.

Microsoft went first

Cryptopolitan reported that Google’s buyouts went global a week after Microsoft offered exits to 60,000 workers. The American Bazaar said Google joined Microsoft in expanding employee buyouts as AI costs rise. The pairing matters because it turns a single-company action into a sector pattern: two large employers are offering money for people to leave voluntarily while shifting spending toward AI infrastructure.

Google’s version is broader than one office. The reported countries span North America, Europe and Asia, from Canada and Swiss technology hubs to France, Germany and Japan. That spread suggests a coordinated global program rather than a local response to one cost centre.

Does India get the offer?

Several Indian outlets asked whether the expansion reaches India. Mint’s headline asked if India is included after the five-country list. The reports naming the five countries did not list India, and The Daily Jagran raised the same question for Indian employees while naming Canada, France and Germany among the destinations.

That leaves the Indian question open. The reports do not say whether Google will extend the voluntary exit package to staff in India. With investor pressure on Alphabet’s stock price still fresh, the next concrete signal would be an announcement naming India or confirming that the five-country rollout is the full list.
