Harley-Davidson’s Sprint 440 borrows India’s X440 to sell a new kind of affordable cruiser

Harley-Davidson no longer needs a Milwaukee heavyweight V-twin to attack a gap it has ignored for years; the Sprint 440 shows the company will convert its Indian X440 platform into a proper cruiser and call it the 2027 model. That is the real story behind the launch ahead of EICMA 2026, not just another engine number.

In brief
  • The Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 is a 2027 cruiser based on the X440's tubular steel and trellis-braced chassis.
  • It has a 440cc single-cylinder engine making 27 PS or 26.7 bhp, with 38 Nm of torque, ABS and a TFT display.
  • The seat height is 671 mm, with a low cruiser stance, a teardrop fuel tank and a kerb weight of 189 kg.
  • UK pricing starts at £4,995 and German pricing starts at 5,700 euros, while the US waits for spring 2027 deliveries and India may get it by the end of 2026.

The Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 arrives as a cruiser-shaped sibling to the Hero-built X440, and the resemblance is structural rather than cosmetic. Bennetts’ technical review describes a tubular steel chassis visually similar to the existing X440 in India, with trellis-style bracing around the engine’s cylinder head and a welded-on subframe. RushLane frames the same machine as a made-in-India cruiser by Hero, while ZigWheels calls it the X440’s cruiser cousin. In other words, Harley is not hiding the family tree; it is repackaging it for a new posture and a new badge.

A mild cruiser built around numbers beginners can actually use

The specification sheet is pointed at first-time and returning riders. The Sprint 440 carries a 440cc single-cylinder engine tuned to 27 PS, which Auto Times of India reports as 26.7 bhp and 38 Nm of torque. Seat height is 671 mm, or about 26.9 inches in Top Speed’s conversion, paired with a low-slung cruiser stance described across reports as a teardrop fuel tank and traditional cruiser design. ABS is included, and the dash gets a TFT display.

At 189 kg, the bike is not featherlight, but the relevant comparison is not a litre-class tourer; it is whether a newcomer can plant a foot and reach the controls without apology. The 671 mm seat and 26.9-inch sill are the numbers that answer that question. The engine output is intentionally modest, and the geometry is deliberately unthreatening. For a Harley badge that has mostly lived at the heavier end of the market, that shift in intent is the product.

The same bike is three different market stories

Pricing tells you where the Sprint 440 is aimed. The bike is priced from £4,995 in the UK, and German dealer material starts it at 5,700 euros, according to Harleysite.de. Those are sensible prices for a 440cc cruiser with a TFT screen, but they also confirm that the model’s job is to pull riders into the brand earlier rather than to convert existing owners into bigger spenders.

Timming is equally divided. Motorcycle.com notes that the 2027 Sprint 440 launches for most of the world but that the US market must wait until spring 2027. India has its own clock. والعظمىCarToq reports spotting the Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 undisguised at a dealership ahead of launch, with an India launch expected by the end of 2026. Since the X440 has already been made in India with Hero, the new Sprint 440 is effectively an exportable interpretation of that relationship, one that can be sold abroad as a Harley while keeping the local X440 logic intact.

The fair objection: this is an entry point, not a premium halo

A critic can reasonably say the Sprint 440 lowers rather than raises Harley’s gate. It is a 27 PS single-cylinder with a sub-700 mm seat, not a new long-stroke flagship. If the concern is parked-outside-a-cafe status, a small burgher bike does not settle it. That is a fair hearing. RideApart and Yahoo both frame the model as what entry-level Harley riders have been waiting for, which is a different ambition from chasing big-price image.

The counter-response is in the details Harley chose to keep. It left the X440-derived trellis bracing and welded subframe in place instead of designing an all-new architecture for the point class. It fitted a TFT display and ABS where a bare-bones commuter would normally get the basics. And it timed a UK price of £4,995, a German starting price of 5,700 euros, an India arrival by the end of 2026 and a US wait until spring 2027. Those choices say Harley would rather own the bottom rung with a complete, credible bike than skip it and hand the space to rivals.

The date that settles the strategy is EICMA 2026, where the Sprint 440 is set to debut as a 2027 model. After that, the launch sequence runs from most markets to the US in spring 2027, while India watches for a dealership appearance before the end of 2026.
