Henry Nicholls Dismissed Cheaply in Auckland as India Take 1-0 Lead Ahead of Rajkot ODI

Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh dismantled New Zealand’s top order in the powerplay during the first ODI in Auckland, dismissing left-handed batter Henry Nicholls for nine runs as the visitors slipped to three wickets down early. India holds a 1-0 lead in the five-match series and enters the second ODI aiming to take a 2-0 lead in Rajkot, Gujarat.

ODI Recall and World Cup Preparations

New Zealand was forced to reshape its squad for the five-match ODI tour of India after both Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra failed to recover from their respective injuries. New Zealand Cricket subsequently named Henry Nicholls and wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert to the revised travelling squad. Speaking in Rajkot ahead of the second ODI fixture on Wednesday, Nicholls said he was looking to make the most of these opportunities as the team builds towards the upcoming ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.

During the series opener in Auckland, Arshdeep set up New Zealand’s downfall early, taking two quick wickets in the powerplay. Upon removing Nicholls cheaply for nine, Arshdeep broke into an animated celebration, roaring in delight and giving the batter a fiery send-off. Arshdeep went on to complete a four-wicket haul in the match. However, his spell drew a blunt reaction from a former Indian captain, who noted that the fast bowler “got greedy” after his initial success in the opening spell.

Domestic Code of Conduct Charge and Career History

The tour comes following a controversy in New Zealand’s domestic circuit involving the Canterbury batter. During Day 3 of a Plunkett Shield first-class match between Auckland and Canterbury, match umpires reported Henry Nicholls for allegedly breaking New Zealand Cricket’s code of conduct. The ball-tampering allegation emerged after television footage from the match showed Nicholls allegedly altering the condition of the ball.

Nicholls first earned a spot on New Zealand’s national contract list during the 2016-17 season. He and all-rounder George Worker were named for the first time when New Zealand Cricket expanded its centrally contracted roster to 21 players.

In Test cricket, Nicholls has recorded several key performances under difficult circumstances. In the second Test against the West Indies, New Zealand was weakened by the absence of regular captain Kane Williamson. Nicholls rode his luck to score a charmed century, helping the hosts recover from a shaky start to finish Day 1 at 294 for 6.

Earlier in his Test career, Nicholls was involved in an unusual opening day at the Basin Reserve in Wellington during a match featuring South Africa’s JP Duminy. Pre-match forecasts predicted that spinners would have little impact on the Basin Reserve pitch. However, for the first time in 70 years, spin bowlers took five or more wickets on the opening day of a Test at the venue.

With the series moving to Rajkot on Wednesday, New Zealand relies on Nicholls and the revised middle order to counter India’s early pace attack and level the five-match series at 1-1.
