Iga Swiatek has officially called time on her 2026 tennis season two weeks early, withdrawing from the Ningbo Open due to a persistent left thigh injury and failing to qualify for the WTA Finals for the first time since 2019. The Polish superstar, who spent the final stretch of her competitive campaign battling physical setbacks and calendar adjustments, currently sits ninth in the WTA rankings with 4,188 points. Having chosen to shut down her campaign early, she has traveled to the Maldives for an extended vacation to rest and recharge.
The decision to halt her season brings a premature close to a year in which Iga Swiatek struggled to capture a Grand Slam title but still managed to collect three tournament trophies. Her most dramatic victory of the second half of the year came at the Korea Open in Seoul. After dropping the opening set, she staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, claiming her first Seoul trophy and her third title of the season. Despite her drop to ninth in the official WTA tour standings, she remains ranked No. 1 in the alternative Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) women’s global standings.
Off-court complications and health issues significantly disrupted her match schedule throughout the year. Swiatek accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned heart medication trimetazidine in an out-of-competition sample collected in August 2024. News18 reported that she was provisionally suspended from September 22 until October 4, a two-week period during which she was forced to miss three tournaments.
Her late-season return was ultimately cut short when her persistent left thigh injury flared up again during the Asian swing. Having struggled early in the year with losses to a variety of opponents, her withdrawal from Ningbo sealed her omission from the WTA Finals, marking the first time since 2020 that she will miss the year-end tournament. Former American player John Isner publicly backed her decision to end her campaign early, insisting he was not worried about her long-term form and calling the early shutdown a smart choice aimed at full recovery.
With her competitive commitments finished for the year, Swiatek traveled to the Maldives to get some rest. She shared a social media carousel displaying her vacation adventures in a striped bikini along with a cheeky message to fans reading, “I know you guys…”. The trip marks her first extended break after taking time off from competing following her Ningbo withdrawal.
Looking ahead to next year’s tour schedule, her coach confirmed that Swiatek will not participate in the United Cup in January for the first time in five years. Having shut down her 2026 campaign early to fully rehabilitate her left thigh injury, the Polish star now enters the offseason facing more questions than answers as she prepares for her 2027 season.
