MEES International School Opens New Location

Hakusan campus will offer revolutionary project-based learning

TOKYO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–MEES International School, a Tokyo-based kindergarten widely recognized for its innovative approach, is expanding to a new location at Hakusan, Bunkyo Ward, in Tokyo. The new campus will begin accepting students in March and offer information sessions at the end of February.

MEES offers affordable, forward-thinking education for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten age students, as well as a kindergarten and elementary afterschool program. The school’s unique educational philosophy is based on the Montessori method and is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach.

While it is an international school, MEES does not aim specifically for foreign students. It seeks to serve families who want their children to learn 21st century skills, such as the 4 Cs: Critical thinking, Creativity, Communication and Collaboration. The school also harnesses the latest in educational technology for its lessons and inspires young learners to have a broad mindset and think independently.

With this expansion MEES is laying the foundation to offer project-based learning (PBL) to even more students in Tokyo. PBL is a student-centered pedagogical approach that is dynamic and provides opportunities for students to acquire in-depth knowledge through engaging and active exploration of real-world challenges.

MEES founder and principal Euft van den Berg grew up in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and was educated with the Montessori method through high school. Van den Berg said, “Being a Montessorian, I am sure Maria Montessori would have approved that I further developed her method. All future education eventually will use elements of the Montessori method, as it is in line with 21st century developments in individualized learning.”

Families interested in learning more about MEES and its educational philosophy are invited to join one of the sessions organized by the school on Saturday, February 27, or Sunday, February 28.
