Oil slips 3% as Qatar talks fail to break Iran war deadlock and Qeshm strikes are reported

Oil prices slipped more than 3% in Singapore on Monday after Qatari-mediated talks to end the Iran war ran a third straight day without a breakthrough, while Tehran said contacts with Washington were continuing.

Iranian negotiators spent Sunday in Doha for the third consecutive day of talks with Qatari mediators aimed at pushing a deal to end the US-Israeli war on Iran, Reuters reported on Nov 1. A day later, in the Iran war file, Iran said contacts to end the eight-month war were continuing even after rounds with the mediators finished with no breakthrough.

Doha talks end with no breakthrough

Reuters reported from Dubai on Nov 2 that the talks had ended with no breakthrough. Tehran’s line was that contacts between Iran and the United States to end the war were still moving. The oil market read that as enough to relax: prices slipped more than 3% on optimism for the Qatari-led talks, with Florence Tan and Trixie Yap reporting from Singapore. Reference entries frame the 2026 Iran war through oil, the Strait of Hormuz, the United States, Israel and maps; the same set of variables appears in Monday’s price move, which came without any breakthrough being announced.

Strikes on Qeshm reported even as war risks are played down

The Wall Street Journal reported that US strikes hit Iran’s Qeshm Island as Trump talked down war risks. The Hindustan Times reported the Qeshm strikes as happening even as Trump ruled out renewed war. That left the messaging split: military action on one track and public reassurance on the other.

CBS News reported that Qatari mediators were returning to Tehran to push for a US-Iran deal, and that Trump acknowledged the outreach while keeping his threats on the table. His formulation was that the war in Iran will be put away very soon ‘one way or the other.’ A CSIS piece framed the live question as what United States military options in Iran actually are; it supplied no decision status.

Tehran’s warnings get louder

The Hindustan Times reported that Iran warned any renewed war with the US could last longer than the previous conflict after Trump suggested more targets inside the country could be struck. WION reported that Iran, the US and Israel intensified psychological warfare, showing off war damage, trading nuclear warnings and leaking military preparations ahead of possible renewed US strikes after the Nov 3 midterm.

News18 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pressed Trump for strikes immediately after the US midterm even as Washington continued diplomatic negotiations with Tehran. The New York Times reported that Netanyahu was jockeying to stay in power, Trump was in a tough midterm fight, and Iranian leaders were bracing for more war regardless of the Israeli or US election outcome, expecting no major shift in policy.

India Today reported Iran’s threat to damage undersea internet cables in the Gulf if war with the US and Israel resumes, and raised the specific concern that cutting those cables could touch India’s internet, IT companies and online services.

Washington decision status

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States has taken no decision on fresh military strikes against Iran, NDTV reported. The same account noted reports that Washington was considering possible joint military action, but named no operational decision.

The date now carrying the most weight is Nov 3. With possible renewed strikes discussed around the US midterm, diplomatic contacts continuing, oil prices easing on talk optimism, and Iran threatening cable damage if war resumes, no new military decision had been announced in the reports.
