Shenzhen’s Guangming Science City Gathers International Scientists to Exchange Research Achievements and Academic Development Trends

SHENZHEN, China–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dozens of scientists from all over the world participated in the International Seminar on New Materials either offline or online on June 30, which was organized by Guangming Science City in Guangming District, Shenzhen Municipality, South China.

As a special program for European participants, the Seminar was part of the second Young Scientists Festival (YSF) 2023 with the theme of “Towards the Bright Future”, which attracted scientists, professors, experts and scholars from Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland and Sweden, and young experts and scholars from scientific research institutions and universities in Guangming Science City as well, to exchange the latest research achievements and international development trends in the field of new materials and actively facilitate international academic cooperation in this regard.

“The talent, wisdom and technological strength of Guangming Science City enabled us to kick off this International Seminar on New Materials,” said G. Kiriakidis, Chairman of the Seminar, President of the European Materials Society and founder of the Optoelectronic Materials Laboratory of the University of Crete.

Kiriakidis added, “Thank the People’s Government of Guangming District, Shenzhen Municipality for organizing this event. Even thousands of miles apart, scientific sharing is still significant and meaningful.” He continued, “I think it is a good opportunity for academic exchange of ideas and innovation, and the open and friendly discussions will better promote academic cooperation and technological exchange between us.”

R. Martins, former President of the International Union Materials Research Society (IUMRS), pointed out in his keynote speech that international technological innovations in the field of new materials could not be made without the participation of Chinese scientists.

“In recent years, China has made great progress in innovative ecological development, and China’s technological breakthroughs in the field of new materials are also obvious to global peers,” Martins added.

With an example of lamps made of carbon black materials in ancient China, Prof. S. Pratsinis from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology started discussions on the bonds between China’s lamp culture and the global development of electric lamp technology. He emphasized that the current global sci-tech innovation and development had benefited from the spread and exchange of culture.

“There are no obstacles and boundaries in science,” Prof. Giorgio Sberveglieri said, chairman of several chemical sensor conferences, “Human beings live in the same ecological environment on earth, which means that we share common scientific goals and visions and that it is very important and wise to stick to scientific research that is useful to society.”

Professor Si Rui from Sun Yat-Sen University Shenzhen Campus and Professor Liu Weishu from Southern University of Science and Technology, as representatives of young scientists in China, conducted in-depth exchanges and sharing in material technology, material design, and other aspects. Futhermore, they also introduced the Guangming Science City to European colleagues.

Besides, 15 young talents from the School of Materials of Sun Yat-sen University, Institute of Advanced Science Facilities in Shenzhen, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Southern University of Science and Technology, etc. were invited to take part in the event.

According to the organizer, this seminar was also a warm-up program for another innovative event of this year’s festival — “Ultimate 72-hour Innovation Challenge for Global Young Talents”.

In July 21-25, the challenge program will be held with a concept of “72 Hours to Live, Research, Study and Practice together”. Under the guidance of academicians and top scientists, young scientists from all over the world will form 12 teams to work on different research subjects, share innovative achievements, and create a bright future for scientific development.
