The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre Joins the OpenMP Effort

33 vendors and research organizations are now collaborating to develop this standard parallel programming model

ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#OpenMP–The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre has joined the OpenMP ARB, a group of leading hardware vendors, software vendors, and research organizations who are creating the standard for the most popular shared-memory parallel programming model in use today.

The Pawsey Centre is a world-class high-performance computing facility accelerating scientific discoveries for Australia’s researchers. Named for Australian scientist Joseph Pawsey, a pioneer of Australian radio astronomy for his work in the field of interferometry, the Centre enables science and accelerates discovery by contributing to the delivery of globally important research. Pawsey is currently serving over 40 organizations and achieving unprecedented results in domains such as radio astronomy, energy and resources, engineering, bioinformatics and health sciences. Pawsey is a government-funded, unincorporated joint venture of CSIRO Australia’s national science agency, and four public universities.

“The OpenMP platform plays a critical role in developing portable code targeting heterogeneous architectures including CPUs and accelerators by offering a unified programming model. At Pawsey, we are confident that OpenMP will be instrumental in addressing future portability and scalability challenges. We are joining the OpenMP ARB intending to contribute to the development of the standard in close collaboration with vendors and other member institutions,” says Ugo Varetto, Pawsey’s CTO.

“We are delighted to welcome a new member from the Asia-Pacific region,” says Michael Klemm, OpenMP ARB CEO. “It is good to see that the OpenMP ARB membership keeps growing around the globe.”

The OpenMP ARB now has 33 members. Join us at SC21 virtually or in-person at booth #919 to meet the members and learn more about OpenMP.

About OpenMP

The mission of the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB) is to standardize directive-based multi-language high-level parallelism that is performant, productive and portable. Jointly defined by a group of major computer hardware and software vendors, and users, the OpenMP API is a portable, scalable model that gives parallel programmers a simple and flexible interface for developing parallel applications for platforms ranging from embedded systems and accelerator devices to multicore systems and shared-memory systems. The OpenMP ARB owns the OpenMP brand, oversees the OpenMP specification and produces and approves new versions of the specification. Further information can be found at https://www.openmp.org.
