Transferred from UAE, 2.5 year old Afghan Girl Makes Miraculous Recovery by a Bone Marrow Transplant at Aster MIMS Hospital, India

LAHORE, Pakistan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--#Afghangirl--Kulsum, a 2.5 year old native of Afghanistan and Pakistani passport holder, miraculously recovered after a rare bone marrow transplant performed at Aster MIMS Hospital in Calicut, India. A resident of UAE, she was referred by doctors to get the transplant done at Aster Calicut and, with special permissions taken from the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, she was successfully transferred to India. In the history of Kerala, this was the first successful bone marrow transplant performed on a child as young as Kulsum.


Kulsum was diagnosed with congenital acute myeloid leukemia and required a bone marrow transplant which was not available in Dubai.

Kulsum's family came to know that Bone Marrow Transplant treatment was available in Aster MIMS Hospital, Calicut in Kerala. Although Afghani, her family holds Pakistani passports due to business purposes for which getting permission to travel to India was not an easy task.

With the guidance of Dr Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman & Managing Director, Aster DM Healthcare, Mr Farhan Yasin, CEO, Aster MIMS North Kerala was able to bring her to India, where she underwent a hemopoietic stem cell transplant.

Her treating doctor Dr Kesavan M R, Consultant Hematologist, Dr K V Gangadharan, Head of Department of Oncology and Dr Suresh Kumar E K, Head of Pediatrics, informed that Kulsum is on the route to a speedy recovery via a press conference arranged in Calicut.
