Democrats seize Senate, flip Ohio governor as Ramaswamy loses and markets watch

Democrats flip six Senate seats and four governorships
In the 2026 USA election, Democrats took control of the Senate, were set to win back the House, and flipped six Republican-held Senate seats and four governorships, with gains in states that backed Donald Trump in 2024, the Mint and CNBC-TV18 reported. Early victories included North Carolina’s Senate seat, while Georgia, Virginia and New Jersey seats were retained. The Mint said polling stations began to close in Indiana and Kentucky at 6 pm ET, or 2300 GMT, with Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and most of Florida following at 7 pm ET.
Whether the count would be clear on election night or days later was not uniform, with expectations of delays in some states as counting got under way after those first poll closures.
- Democrats took Senate control, flipped six Republican seats and four governorships, and were set to win back the House.
- Amy Acton defeated Donald Trump-backed Vivek Ramaswamy for Ohio governor with 50.4 per cent of the vote.
- Suhas Subramanyam won reelection in Virginia's 10th district and Pia Dandiya won a Florida seat.
- Indian stocks were muted after four gain sessions and gold edged higher as the US dollar fell.
- Trump said he would accept the results while claiming Republicans would have won in a landslide without him; six in 10 voters called strikes on Iran wrong.
Acton beats Trump-backed Ramaswamy in Ohio
Democrat Amy Acton defeated Donald Trump-backed Indian-American Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio’s governor’s race and was projected to become Ohio’s first woman governor, according to The Times of India and Mint. Acton polled 50.4 per cent of the vote. In Texas, Democrat Talarico flipped the state’s Senate seat, another loss in a cycle already crowded with Republican setbacks.
Indian-American candidates and Bhatkal’s interest in Michigan
Among the very first results in the USA election, Indian-American Democrat Suhas Subramanyam won reelection to the US House in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. Indian-American Democrat Pia Dandiya also won a Florida seat, Hindustan Times reported. Far from those ballots, the coastal Karnataka town of Bhatkal was following the Michigan Senate race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers, a contest reported as close by Firstpost, with local attention tied to El-Sayed’s wife, Sarah.
Markets react: Indian stocks muted, gold edges higher
Indian stocks traded muted after four sessions of gains, with US election results in focus, Reuters reported. Gold edged higher as the midterm results triggered a sudden fall in the US dollar, FXStreet reported. The same USA election that moved New Delhi’s markets also produced a string of Republican losses in Ohio, Texas and seats Democrats flipped nationally.
Trump accepts, claims landslide and faces Iran war criticism
President Donald Trump said he would accept the midterm results and work with Democrats, but qualified that acceptance, News18 reported. He also claimed Republicans would have won in a “landslide” if he had been running, The Hindu reported. Separately, an Associated Press Election Day poll, reported by Outlook India, found about six in 10 voters considered US military action against Iran a wrong decision, adding scrutiny to Trump’s handling of the conflict. With the 6 pm and 7 pm ET poll closures passed and some counts still moving, the exact time a complete House and Senate final tally will be clear is the next detail to watch.
