HDFC Bank share price extends winning streak, up 12% from 52-week low

Three-day rally takes HDFC Bank shares 12% off the bottom

HDFC Bank shares rose for a third consecutive session on Friday, clawing back 12% from the 52-week low. The rally has narrowed the gap with the broader market, and the CNBCTV18 reported that the bank and the Nifty 50 are on course to post weekly gains of 6% or more — a feat last seen in the week ended January 31, 2021, when both moved together. The benchmark index is up 7% for the period in question.

The hdfc share price also gained 3.2% in the session covered by Mint, as investors weighed quarterly results that showed higher net interest income and an improvement in asset quality. Profit rose 4.7% year on year, though margins declined.

New CEO named as bank seeks a reset

The board has settled on Anup Bagchi as the new MD and CEO, and the appointment has rekindled talk of a re-rating. Gurmeet Chadha of Complete Circle Wealth told CNBC-TV18 that HDFC Bank needs a strategic reset and that Bagchi’s reappointment paves the way for a significant re-rating at the lender.

The succession process had earlier put the stock in play. HDFC had sent the names of two candidates to the Reserve Bank as prospective successors to the outgoing MD and CEO, the board having approved the list on the recommendations of its governance, nomination and remuneration committee, as reported by India TV. Shares surged over 3% on that news.

Analysts split on how far the recovery can run

Not everyone is convinced the bottom has been made. HDFC Bank shares are down 29% in 2026 on a year-to-date basis, and Anand Rathi has warned there is still a long road ahead for the lender to catch up with ICICI Bank on credit growth, net interest margins and return on equity. The brokerage’s caution comes with a stock target price attached, though the summary did not disclose the figure.

The question on the desk now is whether the worst is over after a 27% one-year fall. Mint put that question to analysts in the wake of the results-driven 3.2% jump, with margin compression tempering the profit gain.

Bonus issue draws a buying queue

The first-ever bonus issue is pulling in fresh buyers. India TV reported that shares were in action on August 25, 2025, ahead of the ex-date on August 27, 2025, which the bank fixed as the record date. The report did not disclose the ratio.

Diwali dhanteras view from the Street

Ventura Securities is betting the run continues into the festive season. The brokerage has named HDFC Bank among its Diwali stock picks for Samvat 2083, alongside Park Medi World, Paytm, Meesho, LG Electronics India and Ather Energy. Mint reported the list.

The next markers on the calendar are the record date for the bonus issue on August 27 and the market reaction to whether the three-day rally can hold into a fourth session.
