Dangers of E-cigarettes to American Children Require Immediate Attention

SAN FRANCISCO, US - Media OutReach - 21 April 2023 - The smoking rate among American adults has decreased significantly to its lowest level in history, according to CNN1. However, surveys show that flavored e-cigarette products are slowly catching on among children in the United States. The emergence of new generations of smokers requires our immediate attention, despite the decrease in older smokers.

A research report2 released by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on October 7, 2022, found that 2.52 million American high school and middle school students had used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, representing 14.1% and 3.3% of high school and middle school students respectively. Furthermore, nearly 85% of youth use flavored e-cigarette products. If young people in the country continue to smoke at the current rate, 5.6 million people under the age of 18 in the United States will die from smoking-related diseases. This is approximately 1 out of 13 US residents aged 17 years or younger today. Every member of society should take their share of social responsibility, and DSB is committed to allocating more resources to help address this issue.

Since 2014, e-cigarette products have been the most commonly used tobacco product among young people. As young people become addicted to smoking, some medical professionals have advocated for the use of e-cigarettes as a good way to quit smoking. However, the nicotine, glycerol, and propylene glycol contained in e-cigarettes can damage the human respiratory system. Adding various flavored essences can only increase young smokers' dependence on inhaled nicotine, making it even harder to quit smoking. Long-term use of e-cigarettes may lead to lung infections, bronchitis, and asthma.

Young people are growing up every day, and the future requires them to have strong and healthy bodies. As a socially conscious company, DSB calls on governments of all countries to continue to promote tobacco control measures and to regulate e-cigarette production companies through taxation, policies, and publicity. DSB will assume more social responsibility and actively call on judicial and administrative departments to introduce more specific management systems. We will actively contact social organizations and participate in activities to prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes and smoking to minors.
