Democrats win US Senate 52-48 and flip Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina in 2026 midterms

Democrats take the Senate with 52 seats

Democrats won control of the US Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, taking 52 of the 100 seats in NDTV’s latest figures and clearing the 51-seat majority mark. NBC News also called the chamber for the Democrats in its live results for the 2026 Senate election. The victory was built on flipping Republican-held seats rather than defending them, and it landed in the middle of Donald Trump’s term.

In brief
  • Democrats won control of the US Senate with 52 seats in the 2026 midterm elections, clearing the 51-seat majority mark.
  • Democrats flipped Republican-held Senate seats in Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina, weakening Trump's grip.
  • Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in Michigan, becoming the first Muslim American elected to the US Senate.
  • Chris Pappas, 46, defeated John E Sununu in New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the Senate.
  • CNN and The Financial Express projected Democratic control of the House as well, with the swing tied to living costs, tariffs and the Iran war.

The NewsX live updates framed the arrivals as Democrats making significant gains and taking control of the Senate, alongside key Senate, House and gubernatorial results. CNN’s projection, relayed by the Hindustan Times, put Democrats in control of the US Senate and House, calling it a big jolt for Trump. The Financial Express reported Democrats gaining both chambers as voter frustration mounted over living costs, tariffs and the Iran war. Scroll.in described the night as Democrats taking control of Congress from Trump’s Republican party, while Al Jazeera called it a blue wave across the two chambers.

Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina flip

The most symbolically important pickup was Texas, where Democrat Talarico flipped a Senate seat that Republicans had held, The Hindu reported. Outlook India’s winner list tied the Democratic Senate majority to flips in Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina, with the outlook framed as a dent in Trump’s grip. NewsX’s live tally described the same pattern as Democratic gains, control of the Senate and Republican-held seats turning blue. Those three southern flips gave Democrats seats by turning Republican-held territory blue, which is why a 52-seat total changed the arithmetic without requiring every competitive race to break their way. The live results pages were still tracking House and gubernatorial contests alongside the Senate races, but the Senate count crossed the majority line first.

El-Sayed and Pappas make history

Michigan’s race was one of the marquee contests: NBC News live results showed Democrat Abdul El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers. WION reported that El-Sayed won, becoming the first Muslim American elected to the US Senate, and said the result stood despite Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric. The Times of India likewise carried El-Sayed’s win as the country getting its first Muslim senator. New Hampshire added a separate milestone. Democrat Chris Pappas, 46, defeated Republican John E Sununu in the November 3 contest to become the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate, Firstpost reported. The two wins give the incoming Democratic Senate class figures who alter its composition as well as its size.

What the midterms do to Trump’s final two years

For Trump, Tuesday’s vote was about more than the number of seats his party retained, The Times of India noted. The Financial Express tied the backlash to living costs, tariffs and the Iran war, and NDTV recorded his response as a “Veto” post after Democrats took the Senate. The Hindu carried his claim that Republicans would have won in a “landslide” if he was running. That framing makes the “Veto” post and the landslide claim read as an attempt to move the narrative, not as a concession.

A 52-seat Senate majority is enough to confirm nominees and advance Democratic legislation without Republican votes on routine matters, so the loss of the chamber is a concrete institutional setback. The same must be said of the House if the CNN and Financial Express projections hold: Trump would face an opposition Congress on both sides of Capitol Hill. The balance of the Senate after the count was 52 Democrats to 48 Republicans. The fixed next step is certification of the Michigan and New Hampshire results that produced El-Sayed and Pappas, and the final Texas count behind Talarico. Until those certifications complete, the 52-seat figure is the number most worth keeping.
