“This quarter’s report shows great year-over-year growth in average connection speeds and overall broadband adoption,” noted David Belson, editor of the State of the Internet Report. “This is particularly important as consumer expectations rise and many high-profile events, like the summer games in Rio, will be streamed this year. The progress we’re seeing across our key metrics shows that, while there’s still work to be done, more parts of the world are increasingly able to support the delivery of broadcast-quality video content online.”
The report states that global average internet connection speed have increased by 8.6% (5.6 Mbps) from the third quarter (this is a 23% increase YoY). In Asia South Korea had the top average connection speed of 26.7 Mbps. India is the lowest at the average speed of 2 Mbps. When we talk about the peak Internet speed in India which is 21.2 Mbps, its below the South Korea’s average speed of 26.7 Mbps. The peak speeds have seen a rise of 46 percent compared to last year. In comparison, South Korea has a peak speed of 135.7 Mbps.
When it comes to percentage of users having 4 Mbps or higher broadband connection, India ranks just above Philippines. 17 percent of connections in India are 4Mbps and above. Among other Asia-Pac countries, China has 41 percent while neighbouring Sri Lanka has 52 percent connections that are over 4 Mbps.
