K.C. Bokadia recalls the stars who never billed producers for staff

Veteran filmmaker K.C. Bokadia has said Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Rajinikanth never asked producers to pay for their personal staff, even as entourage bills and vanity-van costs keep rising. He urged actors to weigh producers’ finances before adding staff to a budget.

The Times of India reported the remark during the current entourage-cost debate. Asianet Newsable framed the same point as praise for the stars’ professionalism and placed it beside the rising cost of vanity vans. Bokadia did not give a figure for what actors’ personal staff can cost, but the point he made was narrow: these four stars did not pass personal payroll onto the production.

His memories then moved to film sets. In the 1991 film Phool Bane Angaray, Rekha played a police officer and delivered a gripping performance. During an intense climax, she fell off a horse; the Times of India recounted that she got back on her feet within a minute and the shoot continued.

Bokadia also recalled the muhurat of Aaj Ka Arjun, released in 1990 with Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Prada in the leads and Suresh Oberoi, Anupam Kher and Asrani in support. A Tamil Nadu chief minister visited that muhurat, Deccan Chronicle reported. Actor Vijay was 18 to 20 years old at the time.

On his 1995 film Maidan-E-Jung, K.C. Bokadia remembered Manoj Kumar accidentally bumping into Dharmendra during a song shoot.

Two stories about money carried more personal weight. Shah Rukh Khan, he said, refused to accept pending remuneration of ₹95 lakh for Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, a gesture tied to their personal bond. The Lokmat Times reported the ₹95 lakh account as money SRK offered to forgo. For Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, it was pending remuneration, not a future fee, which is why the forgoing was unusual. Rajinikanth, he recalled, gave him ₹1–2 crore during a difficult period, help linked to their friendship and collaborations.

Bokadia also spoke of Rajesh Khanna’s later years, recalling the actor’s warmth as well as his loneliness, limited work and regret. The contrast matters because it comes from one producer who worked across generations rather than from a tribute written at the time.

The dates mark the scope: the recalled films span police drama, a multi-starrer with Bachchan and Jaya Prada, and an action film from the mid-1990s, mostly the 1990–1995 period. The remarks are career recollections, not news of a new release. What happens next is behavioural. Producers now have a named benchmark for refusing personal-staff bills, and the open question is whether that standard becomes the one stars are asked to meet.
