Khalid Jamil drops Gurpreet, picks three keepers for New Zealand friendlies

Khalid Jamil has dropped veteran goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu from India’s 23-man squad for the November friendlies against New Zealand, ending the former captain’s run of near-constant selection. The announcement came on Friday, and it is the clearest signal yet that Jamil is building a side on form rather than reputation.

The match selection marks the first time the Indian senior team takes to the field since the historic friendlies against Panama, Brazil and Uruguay in September-October, the Indian Express reported. Those three games — capped by a 1-6 beating by Uruguay — left the squad with little to build on beyond exposure to stronger football.

No guaranteed places in Jamil’s reckoning

Jamil’s selection has rotated the squad aggressively. Sportstar reported that the 23-man group signals a merit-driven approach with no guaranteed places. The goalkeeping department shows that most clearly. Rather than carrying Gurpreet as first-choice, Jamil has picked three keepers: Hrithik Tiwari, Som Kumar and Vishal Kaith. PTI reported that Gurpreet was sidelined, while defender Anwar Ali was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Sandhu’s omission removes the dressing-room voice that led India through recent qualifiers, though Jamil has given no hint of fitness concerns behind it — the move reads as a selection call, not a medical one.

What the Uruguay defeat changed

Jamil took personal responsibility for the 1-6 loss to Uruguay in October, refusing to blame either the 34-minute weather interruption or his players’ effort, PTI reported at the time. That accountability matters here. A coach who accepted blame without deflecting it is now entitled to the benefit of doubt when he reshapes the squad. The friendlies against New Zealand — a World Cup participant — give him two low-stakes matches to test the rotation before his system is judged in competitive football.

Counter-point: continuity has its own case

The fair counter to this reading is that dropping Gurpreet mid-cycle, after a run of three high-profile friendlies, destabilises the spine at the worst possible moment. Goalkeeping requires trust, and India’s best recent defensive performances were built across two competitions with the veteran between the sticks. Jamil’s answer so far is that trust is earned in every training camp and every match — and he has been consistent about that since taking charge. The evidence of whether this approach is right will come in the two New Zealand games themselves, when the three keepers get their first real audition.

The India U-23 squad for the same tour was confirmed separately by the Hindustan Times, meaning the November international window will see the senior and age-group sides on tour simultaneously. What happens next is simple: Jamil will put one of Tiwari, Som or Kaith between the posts, and the team takes the field against New Zealand with the first honest test of this selection policy in front of it.
