India took a 1-0 series lead in their one-day international clash against New Zealand after securing a five-wicket victory through the DLS method in a rain-affected opening match at Eden Park in Auckland. Chasing a revised target of 143 runs, star batter Virat Kohli struck 74 off 51 balls to guide the visitors home, leveling a record held by an Australian legend along the way.
Earlier, Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh picked up four wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 185. Heavy rain interrupted play during the innings break, forcing match officials to recalibrate India’s target using the DLS method. The result is the latest in a series of international and domestic fixtures decided by the mathematical calculation that has managed rain disruptions in limited-overs cricket since 1997.
The first ODI at Eden Park turned on Arshdeep Singh’s opening spell and disciplined bowling from India’s attack, which bundled out New Zealand for 185 runs. When weather conditions halted play, match referees invoked the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern rule to readjust the second-innings chase to 143 runs from a reduced allotment of overs.
Virat Kohli anchored the chase with an aggressive display, scoring 74 off 51 balls. His half-century saw him equal a milestone record previously established by an Australian cricket legend for achievements in limited-overs cricket. India reached the revised score with five wickets remaining to take the opening match of the series.
Weather interruptions have forced revised calculations in several other high-profile tournaments and bilateral series. In domestic A-team fixtures, Afghanistan A defeated India A by four runs under the DLS method after rain halted their match mid-way.
In the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, Nepal pulled off a six-run win over the United Arab Emirates via the DLS method. In bilateral international action, Australia secured a 47-run victory over South Africa in their third ODI. Australia had accumulated 322/9 on the back of half-centuries from Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey before weather intervened during South Africa’s reply.
The calculation system was also called into action during the ICC T20 World Cup, where rain disrupted several group matches. Similar scenes played out during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales, where heavy rain washed out multiple matches, including India’s group-stage clash against New Zealand, and led to shortened targets in several key encounters.
The reliance on the system comes shortly after the death of English statistician Frank Duckworth, co-inventor of the rule, who passed away at the age of 84 on Friday, June 21, ESPNcricinfo reported. Duckworth, working alongside fellow English statistician Tony Lewis, created the original Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) formula to fix run-rate anomalies in weather-affected matches.
First introduced to international cricket in 1997, the framework replaced older rules like the most-economical-overs system, which frequently penalized the team batting second. Data scientist Steve Stern of Bond University in Australia later updated the formula to reflect modern, higher scoring rates, leading to its current title as the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
The DLS method operates on a mathematical formulation designed to establish a fair revised target for the team batting second when rain cuts short a game. Rather than looking only at run rates, the formula treats remaining overs and wickets in hand as a combined pool of available resources. Both teams begin an innings with 100 percent of their resources—50 overs and 10 wickets in standard ODIs.
When rain interrupts play, the formula calculates the remaining resources available to each team based on historical statistical trends. If the second team loses overs, its target is scaled to match the percentage of resources it had compared to the first team, keeping the contest balanced despite lost playing time.
