Lakers Beat Heat 138-117, Doncic’s Historic Start Rolls On

The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Miami Heat 138-117 at Crypto.com Arena on Monday night, lifting their record to 6-2. The Heat fell to 2-5, opening a five-game West Coast trip with a loss.

In brief
  • The Lakers beat the Heat 138-117 at Crypto.com Arena, improving to 6-2.
  • Luka Doncic was not on the injury report and continued a historic start to the season.
  • Miami fell to 2-5 despite arriving on a two-game winning streak that included a 145-point game against Indiana.
  • The Heat's five-game West Coast trip continues Wednesday.

The Lakers vs Heat matchup carried more weight than a typical early-season game. Miami arrived with two straight wins for the first time in the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, while the Lakers were playing the second night of a back-to-back.

Sports Illustrated had asked before the game whether the Heat were finally finding a groove. Yahoo Sports wrote that Miami was finally gaining momentum, citing the back-to-back wins. Monday supplied a blunt answer.

Doncic extends a historic start

Luka Doncic was missing from the Lakers’ injury report before tipoff, a significant update given his central role in the team’s fast start. He played, and he kept the run alive, continuing what the New York Post called a historic start to the season.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said he doesn’t take for granted what Doncic has brought to the team, pointing to the way the guard has piled up historic performances night after night. Redick’s comments capture the mood around the Lakers, whose offense runs through Doncic.

The injury report was the biggest pregame storyline, and it worked in the Lakers’ favor. Clearing their franchise player allowed Los Angeles to field its strongest possible lineup against a Miami defense still finding its identity under Antetokounmpo. The heavy attention on Doncic’s status reflected how much the Lakers rely on him.

Heat’s momentum evaporates in Los Angeles

The Heat entered the game having lost their first four contests of the Giannis era before winning back-to-back, including a 145-point eruption against Indiana. It was their best offensive showing of the young season.

None of that carried west. Miami fell behind early and never seriously threatened, conceding 138 points in a game defined by defensive breakdowns. The inside scoring that carried them against Indiana largely disappeared, and the deficit grew as the Lakers pushed the pace.

At 2-5, the Heat now face a critical stretch. They have four more games on the West Coast after Monday, starting Wednesday, before returning home. Every one of those games carries weight for a team trying to climb back to .500.

Back-to-back barely slowed the Lakers

Previews had flagged turnovers, interior defense and three-point shooting as the deciding factors. The Lakers, on tired legs, won those battles by a wide margin.

Playing their second game in two nights, the Lakers controlled the contest throughout. The Heat, rested and coming off their highest-scoring output of the season, could not generate clean looks, while the Lakers moved the ball freely and found open shooters. It was a stark contrast to the 145-point performance Miami produced against Indiana.

Sunday’s win had set up the back-to-back, and the Lakers carried that form into Monday. Their depth held up even with the quick turnaround, and the result is a 6-2 record — one of the stronger marks in the Western Conference, with Doncic’s individual brilliance as the engine.

Next up for both teams

The game tipped off at 10 p.m. ET at Crypto.com Arena, with broadcast coverage on WPLG Local 10 in South Florida and My 15 WTCN in West Palm Beach.

The Heat continue their trip Wednesday, needing wins to avoid falling further behind in the East. The Lakers, now 6-2, will look to extend their strong start in their next outing. With four road games remaining on the swing, Miami’s early-season record could look very different by the time they return home.

For Miami, the question is simple: was the two-game winning streak a real turnaround or a brief uptick? Monday’s 138-117 result in the Lakers vs Heat series offered a blunt answer, and the Heat get another chance to show progress on Wednesday.
