MSEDCL launches scheme to distribute one crore LED bulbs (Each cost Rs.100)

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company has launched a scheme to distribute one crore LED bulbs to domestic consumers as part of its energy conservation plan. A function was organised October 28 at Udyan Prasad Karyalaya where the scheme was launched for the MSEDCL. Ramrao Munde, Chief Engineer, Pune zone of MSEDCL said the target was to distribute LED bulbs to 11 lakh domestic consumers. Each consumer would be encouraged to buy at least ten LED bulbs. Suryakant Pathak, working president of Grahak Panchayat and Arunkumar Gupta, Director of Energy Efficiency Services Limited were also present on the occasion.

The scheme is part of the Centres Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP). The aim is to encourage energy efficiency in the country. LED bulbs have long life, at least 50 times more than ordinary bulbs, and 8-10 times that of CFLs, and therefore save both energy and cost in the medium term. The project’s target is to install LED bulbs for domestic and street-lighting in 100 cities by March 2016.

Across Maharashtra, a total of 18 crore LED bulbs will be distributed to 1.76 lakh domestic consumers. In the first phase, the bulbs will be available at the Rasta Peth MSEDCL bill collection centre from October 30, Munde said. “We hope to achieve the target of distributing one crore LED bulbs in three months,” he added.

In the private sector, the cost of one LED bulb is Rs 400 but at the MSEDCL counters it will be sold for Rs 100. The use of LED bulb will lead to an annual saving of Rs 180 per bill.
