The recent debate around Amrita Singh shows that a public figure can be an intimate family anchor in one account and a hostile stranger in another, with no contradiction because the relationships occupy entirely different generations.
Saba Ali Khan has now described Amrita Singh as a “motherly figure” and the person she could turn to for comfortable advice during her teenage years. Indian Express reported Saba’s recollection as part of an interview that also touched Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s final moments and Saif Ali Khan’s family history. Her account gives an unusually domestic view of a woman usually encountered through film roles, marriage announcements and divorce headlines.
Saba Ali Khan’s description is specific rather than ceremonial. Amrita Singh was, she said, more approachable than her own parents when she needed guidance. The role was part mother and part elder sister, not merely a label attached to her brother’s former wife.
The distinction matters because of how Saba framed her present loyalties. Times of India reported her saying, “I love Bebo, but Amrita was good with me too.” She has sided emotionally with Kareena Kapoor Khan, her sister-in-law, without erasing Amrita Singh’s earlier importance. That sentence is the clearest evidence that closeness and loyalty in an extended family need not be allocated equally.
The interview did not reduce Amrita Singh to Saif Ali Khan’s separated wife. It placed her inside the Pataudi household as someone who helped ease Sana into adulthood.
The counterweight to Saba’s warmth comes in the same recollections. Reports describe a changed equation after Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh separated in 2004 following 13 years of marriage. The closeness of the teenage years did not necessarily continue at the same intensity.
That qualification deserves a fair hearing. A maternal, advisory figure during adolescence may simply fade as the younger person grows, especially following a family rupture. What Saba’s account cannot establish is that the relationship remained consistently close, because its own chronology says otherwise.
The same interview reportedly connected the separation to Saba’s wider family reflections, including her father’s death. This makes the changing Amrita Singh equation one thread in a longer account of loss and adjustment rather than its sole conclusion.
At the opposite end of public commentary, Orhan Awatramani, known as Orry, has spoken at length about his fallout with Sara Ali Khan and Amrita Singh. Indian Express reported that, on Neha Dhupia’s latest vlog, Orry said Sara Ali Khan ghosted him when he needed help and that Amrita Singh abused him. Mashable India separately reported his recollection of what he called a 2021 encounter with Amrita Singh.
Orry has said Sara and Amrita Ali Khan were unfollowed on Instagram after the friendship ended. He also claimed revenge was coming, although no reported response from Sara Ali Khan or Amrita Singh appears in the sources reviewed. His account is therefore one side: detailed, personal and unresolved through anyone else’s denial or explanation.
These claims cannot be squared with Saba Ali Khan’s memories, but they do not need to be. Saba’s experience was built over years of family proximity; Orry’s allegations concern a disputed adult friendship and a single reported encounter. One describes guidance in a shared household, while the other describes alleged hostility in a sharply different relationship.
The week’s reports also recalled a very different phase in Amrita Singh’s history. News18 revisited Ravi Shastri’s 1980s romance with her and his stated refusal to marry an actress. His condition, reported in that interview, was that his partner’s “first priority should be her home.” That position reportedly ended the relationship.
The contrast across these accounts is striking. Decades earlier, a partner’s professional identity itself became disqualifying. Today, younger relatives and friends place Amrita Singh in opposing roles—as a motherly counsellor on one side and an alleged aggressor on the other. The common thread is not a verdict on her character, but the extent to which the same woman can carry incompatible meanings for people who never occupied the same relationship.
