Amish Shah leads Jay Feely in Arizona CD1 as Indian Americans win key US races

Democrat Dr Amish Shah held a double-digit lead over Republican Jay Feely in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District in early results from the US midterm elections on Wednesday. Shah had 54.9% of the counted votes compared to Feely’s 43.2% as of the first major precinct returns, giving him a lead of nearly 12 points.

The Arizona CD1 race was too close to call because a large share of ballots remained outstanding. Shah led throughout the evening among returns reported so early, but the margin was not yet enough to declare a winner.

Key points
  • Dr Amish Shah led Jay Feely in Arizona's 1st Congressional District with 54.9% to 43.2% in early returns.
  • The CD1 race was still too close to call, with more ballots to count before a winner is declared.
  • Shah is an emergency medicine doctor, former Arizona state lawmaker and son of Indian immigrants.
  • If elected, Shah would be the first Indian American to represent Arizona in the US Congress.
  • Indian American candidates also recorded victories in congressional and state races across the US.

Early returns show a big margin, not a call

Unofficial results showed Shah with the early lead and the race remained close enough that Fox 10 reporters covered the contest as potentially decisive for control of the US House. At one point, Shah’s lead held at roughly 12 percentage points, or close to 55% against 43%, though those figures reflected only part of the total vote.

News outlets covering the contest repeatedly described it as a battleground US House race and as one that could shape control of Congress. The seat was being decided without the incumbent, with outgoing Rep David Schweikert’s departure leaving the seat open. In an open-seat fight, independent voters figured to decide the outcome, one report noted. Those voters did not yet produce a reliable trend from the early count.

Shah addressed supporters as he continued to lead Feely. In his speech, he pledged to keep working in a bipartisan way in Congress if the results held and he won. He has not been declared the winner.

Who Amish Shah is

Amish Shah is an emergency medicine physician and former Arizona state lawmaker. He is the son of immigrants from India and is running as the Democratic candidate in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District against Republican Jay Feely. If he wins, Shah would become the first Indian American to represent Arizona in the US Congress.

He has campaigned for a closely contested House seat in a district stretching through the Scottsdale area. The Hindustan Times identified Shah as a physician running for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. Firstpost described him as a former state lawmaker, a son of Indian immigrants and an emergency medicine doctor.

His profile fits a broader pattern. Indian American candidates registered victories in congressional and state elections across the United States in the same midterm cycle. Those wins came alongside Shah’s early lead in a closely watched House contest.

The Arizona 1st District race

Rep Schweikert’s decision to leave the seat turned the 1st District into one of the most closely watched House races of the midterm. Democrats and Republicans both treated the district as battleground territory, and media outlets covering the returns stressed that independents would be decisive.

Feely, the Republican in the race, trailed through the early count. Shah spoke to supporters while that lead held. The candidates’ next step depends on the vote count: more ballots still had to be counted before any candidate could be declared the winner.

The district was not the only open House race to draw attention nationwide. Reports described Democrats sweeping other contests as returns rolled in, while the Arizona count stayed tight enough to resist an early call in either direction.

Indian Americans across the US ballot

Beyond Arizona, Indian American candidates recorded wins in congressional races and state elections in several places. Those results came in the same election cycle in which Shah was leading the Arizona CD1 contest. Multiple outlets grouped Shah’s early lead with the broader success of Indian American candidates in US races.

That pattern included key victories in races described as congressional or state-level contests. The reports did not give the names or margin of every Indian American candidate who won, but they made clear that the wins were spread across the US map rather than concentrated in one state.

What happens next

Shah’s campaign continues to count ballots and Feely remains within reach as the Arizona count continues. The race stays too close to call, officials and reporters said, with outstanding votes likely to close the gap. The next concrete milestone is the completion of the count, which could confirm whether the early lead holds, shrinks or flips.

Meanwhile, the broader midterm picture includes Indian American wins nationwide and a CD1 race that may still affect the balance of the US House. Shah said on election night that he would work across party lines in Congress if elected, a pledge his campaign will test in the final count.
