A Learjet 60 business jet carrying nine people crashed Sunday afternoon into a residential area in Greenacres, Florida, and all nine people on board died, the US Federal Aviation Administration said. The plane crashed near Military Trail in Palm Beach County, close to a mobile home park and not far from Cresthaven. The accident happened on Sunday, November 1.
The aircraft was flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it went down. Footage of the crash showed the jet nose-diving from the sky and slamming into the ground at high speed before bursting into flames. The jet clipped a tree before hitting the ground, tore open a massive crater and sent a fireball up near homes in the built-up area. The Independent described the explosion as a massive fireball, and Republic World placed the impact inside a Greenacres mobile home park.
Moneycontrol reported that the pilot reported icing and turbulence before the aircraft began a rapid descent. The New York Times reported that authorities are investigating how an aircraft carrying nine people climbed to an altitude of 37,000 feet on Sunday afternoon and then suddenly fell from the sky. AccuWeather reported that thunderstorms swept the area at the time of the accident.
No official cause has been released. WPBF reported that questions remain over what caused the crash. The details made public so far place the aircraft at high altitude after a weather encounter and then in a fatal dive over a residential area, with the pilot’s radio transmissions the clearest indicator of the emergency in the cockpit. The crash video shows the Learjet 60 leaving the sky in a near-vertical dive rather than a gliding approach.
Released cockpit-to-tower audio captures a frantic pilot. Yahoo reported that the pilot radioed the controller in a desperate voice, intermittently screaming and telling air traffic control the plane was in dire trouble. WION reported the final transmission as: “Holy fu*k, we’re out of time…mayday.” The plane crashed within moments of that call.
The audio released after the crash is the central public record of the crew’s final seconds. It does not establish why the Learjet 60 lost altitude, but it shows the pilot recognised the emergency at a late stage and was still transmitting while the aircraft was going down.
The crash happened as thunderstorms moved across South Florida on Sunday. It occurred in the West Palm Beach area of Palm Beach County and involved a private business jet rather than a scheduled airline flight. The FAA confirmed the aircraft type, the residential location and the death toll.
What happens next rests with the ongoing investigation. The anchors of the case are the cockpit-to-tower audio, the climb to 37,000 feet and the rapid descent shown in the crash video, but the question of why the plane crashed after reaching that altitude remains unanswered.
