Sporadic boycotts and clashes shadow Rajasthan’s sarpanch election results as one village picks its sarpanch by lottery

Polling for 3,716 sarpanch and 34,218 panch posts in 27 Rajasthan districts ended at 6 pm on Thursday, Nov. 5. Turnout reached 68.3% till 6 pm, and the first sarpanch election results from the day carried the texture of Rajasthan’s village politics: sporadic boycotts, clashes in places, a four-recount tie broken by lottery, and a two-million-follower astrologer down to 33 votes.
The posts being filled are the village-level seats: a sarpanch for the gram panchayat and panch members for the wards. The contest has run in phases, with separate counts of gram panchayats and districts reported for each stage.
- Phase three polling covered 3,716 sarpanch and 34,218 panch posts in 27 Rajasthan districts and ended at 6 pm on Nov. 5.
- Turnout was 68.3% till 6 pm, while the phase was marked by sporadic boycotts, clashes and incidents of violence.
- In Barmer's Galaberi gram panchayat, two women candidates tied at 614 votes after four recounts and the sarpanch was chosen by lottery.
- Astrologer and YouTuber Omprakash Bishnoi, with over two million followers, got 33 votes in a Jodhpur district sarpanch election.
- A returning officer died of a heart attack during counting, while the Modak SHO said voting in Kukda Khurd gram panchayat had been peaceful.
Three phases have carried the rural poll
| Phase | Coverage reported |
|---|---|
| First | Polling for panch and sarpanch posts in 3,314 gram panchayats across 16 districts; voting began on Saturday |
| Second | Voting for panch and sarpanch posts in 3,626 gram panchayats across 22 districts |
| Third | 3,716 sarpanch posts and 34,218 panch posts in 27 districts; polling concluded at 6 pm on Nov. 5 |
The Print reported the first phase numbers for the opening stage of panch and sarpanch elections. The Hindu reported heavy voting in the second phase panchayat polls across 22 districts, with 84.37% turnout in Rampura Dabri and protests in select areas. The Times of India put Rajasthan’s third-phase turnout at 68.3% till 6 pm. PTI said polling concluded for 3,716 sarpanch and 34,218 panch posts in 27 districts at 6 pm on Thursday.
When boycotts and clashes entered the booths
The resistance was scattered rather than a single front. The Hindu reported that villagers cast votes for phase three of rural polls amid boycott. ThePrint said phase three concluded marked by sporadic boycotts and clashes. PTI reported incidents of violence alongside the conclusion. The second phase had already carried protests in select areas, so the third phase was not an aberration. A boycott call and a clash point in the same election cycle means high turnout can still coexist with angry pockets.
Can four recounts still end in a lottery?
In Galaberi gram panchayat in Barmer, yes. The Times of India reported that after four recounts both women candidates were still tied at 614 votes, so the sarpanch was decided by lottery. A tie at 614 is brutally exact: not one recount, not an observer’s call, but four recounts followed by chance. It also left a woman sarpanch in a contest where both finalists were women.
Fame did not translate. The Economic Times reported that Jodhpur-based astrologer and YouTuber Omprakash Bishnoi, who has more than two million followers across social media, secured just 33 votes in a sarpanch election. The contrast is numerical rather than moral: two million followers, 33 votes.
When counting turned to a death
ETV Bharat reported that a returning officer died of a heart attack during vote counting for sarpanch elections in Rajasthan. The Modak station house officer, Rajendra Prasad Meena, identified the returning officer for Kukda Khurd gram panchayat as Meena and said voting there had been peaceful during the day. The death came at the counting table, not the booth.
