The Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led coalition has captured the Pulivendula Municipality by a massive margin of 13,875 votes, taking control of the long-standing YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and YS family stronghold for the first time in history. The Pulivendula election results marked a major political shift in YSR Kadapa district, as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition expanded its footprint across urban local bodies in Andhra Pradesh.
Beyond Pulivendula, the TDP-led alliance established early leads and secured victories across eight civic bodies in the state. The coalition logged significant wins in Kovvur, Sullurpeta, and Uyyuru as vote counting progressed under the 2026 municipal election framework. The outcome in Pulivendula comes after days of political volatility, street clashes, and legal battles that went all the way to the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
For decades, Pulivendula served as the undisputed regional base for former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and his family. The TDP alliance’s 13,875-vote margin in the town signals a historic breakthrough in Kadapa district, where the YSRCP had long exercised dominant control over local governance structures.
TDP supporters and coalition partners celebrated across Kadapa as returning officers confirmed the final vote counts. Ruling NDA leaders attributed the victory to public support for the state government’s ongoing development and welfare programmes. Coalition representatives stated that urban voters across the district backed their administrative agenda over the YSRCP’s political legacy in its home territory.
The sweep in Kadapa district represents one of the most substantial shifts in urban local body politics in Andhra Pradesh in recent years. By unseating the opposition in its primary stronghold, the TDP alliance consolidated its authority across the region’s municipal bodies.
The declaration of the Pulivendula municipal election results followed a tense and violent electoral buildup in the district. On Sunday, polling across several parts of Kadapa district was marred by political clashes between rival party workers. Pulivendula witnessed particularly volatile scenes during the voting hours, prompting the deployment of tough police forces under senior officer Koya Praveen to manage security and restore order at vulnerable polling stations.
The political heat intensified when YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy chose to skip casting his own vote during the election. Instead, Jagan descended on Pulivendula to take charge of his party’s ground strategy and mobilize local cadre amidst the rising tensions.
Following the polling day incidents, Jagan staged a sit-in protest directly outside the Returning Officer’s office in Pulivendula. Staging the demonstration alongside party supporters, the former Chief Minister launched a direct attack on the ruling TDP, accusing the coalition of poll irregularities and demanding an immediate repoll in the municipality.
Legal challenges were raised to stop the official tallying, but the Andhra Pradesh High Court intervened and gave the green signal for counting to proceed. With the High Court’s clearance, election authorities completed all arrangements, opened the ballot boxes, and formally declared the results.
While Pulivendula remained the focal point of the state’s political contest, the TDP-led coalition expanded its dominance across other urban centres in Andhra Pradesh. In addition to sweeping Kadapa, coalition candidates secured decisive victories in Kovvur, Sullurpeta, and Uyyuru, while maintaining leads in five other civic bodies as counting concluded.
The loss of Pulivendula alongside Uyyuru marks a major setback for the YSRCP’s urban local body network. Party leaders had counted on Pulivendula to anchor their political revival, but the coalition’s widespread margins across the state demonstrated strong support for the ruling alliance’s candidates.
With counting finished across these key urban areas, administrative focus moves to establishing local governance. The political atmosphere in Pulivendula remains charged as preparations begin for the municipal chairperson election scheduled for November 1, where the newly elected TDP coalition members will take formal control of the civic body.
