Wall Street Stocks Rebound as Dow Jones Gains 460 Points on Crude Oil Slump

US stocks staged a sharp recovery on Monday morning as falling crude oil prices and a strong rebound in major technology shares offset lingering fears over corporate expenditure. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged as much as 460 points, gaining 0.78% to reverse a significant portion of last week’s deep market losses.

The swift rebound in the Dow Jones follows a grim session on Friday, when the blue-chip index crashed 500 points and the Nasdaq composite plummeted more than 2.5% amid widespread anxiety over artificial intelligence capital spending.

At a glance
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged up to 460 points on Monday, led by gains in Amazon and Sherwin-Williams.
  • Crude oil prices plunged over 6% following US-Iran diplomatic talks mediated by Qatar.
  • Chip maker Marvell Technology agreed to purchase Lumentum in an $80 billion acquisition deal.

Crude oil slump drives market rebound

A dramatic drop in energy prices provided the primary spark for Monday’s stock market rally. Crude oil benchmark prices tumbled over 6% following reports of diplomatic progress in the Middle East. High-level discussions were held over the weekend between Iranian officials and mediators from Qatar, raising hopes that supply risks across the region could dissipate.

Sentiment was further influenced by comments from former US President Donald Trump, who stated on Sunday that the United States had already won in Iran. The slump in crude oil alleviated fears regarding rising input costs for domestic businesses, supporting index futures across the board. CME Group index futures showed E-mini Dow Jones futures advancing 0.25% to around 52,050 during European trading hours, while S&P 500 futures rose 0.37% to 7,640 and Nasdaq 100 futures jumped sharply near 28,000.

Tech equities rally after brutal selloff

Technology shares led the Wall Street advance, recovering momentum after Friday’s steep retreat. Shares of Nvidia Corporation and Amazon.com Inc. notched steady gains early in the session. Amazon, alongside paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams Co., emerged as the top gainers powering the price-weighted 30-stock benchmark higher.

The broader tech sector, however, remains split. Friday’s market collapse was triggered by Amazon’s surging expenditure on artificial intelligence infrastructure and a severe cash-burn warning from Intel Corporation. While Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Amazon managed to catch a bid on Monday, Intel extended its downward slide following weak corporate guidance. Alphabet also struggled to regain firm footing after extending its previous losses.

Mega M&A deal and corporate earnings in focus

In corporate announcements, semiconductor maker Marvell Technology entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Lumentum Holdings in an $80 billion deal, highlighting continued consolidation across the technology supply chain.

Elsewhere, consumer products giant The Estee Lauder Companies reported higher sales and net profits for its fiscal first quarter, offering positive signals that its corporate turnaround strategy is yielding results. In the aviation sector, Dublin-based carrier Ryanair indicated it is exploring new operational expansion opportunities as European listings traded higher.

Key technical support levels hold ahead of elections

From a chart perspective, the Dow Jones Industrial Average successfully tested its 200-day simple moving average (SMA) and the 50% Fibonacci retracement support level before buyers stepped in to spark Monday’s 400-point bounce. Market technical analysts viewed the defense of these live support levels as essential to preventing further downside pressure.

Investors are now bracing for a busy slate of quarterly earnings reports, with Apple, Palantir Technologies, AMD, and Qualcomm scheduled to report results this week. In addition to corporate numbers, traders are closely monitoring political developments leading into the upcoming US midterm elections, where shifts in the Senate and House of Representatives could significantly impact corporate taxation and regulatory policy.
