HSBC to merge Hang Seng Bank's asset manager into its fund business as index climbs back above 23,000

HSBC will merge Hang Seng Bank’s asset management unit into its fund business, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said on Monday, after the London-based bank took over the Hong Kong lender. The Standard and The Business Times reported the move. The reports did not disclose a timetable or a price for the integration.

The news reached investors as the Hang Seng Index closed out the week of October 26 to 30 up 0.87%. A strong Friday rebound carried the gauge back above 23,000 points, ending its two-week losing streak, BusinessToday reported. The recovery came despite persistent weakness in AI stocks through the week.

Hong Kong recovers, neighbours fall

On Monday’s morning session, the Hang Seng Index rose 142.99 points, or 0.61%, to close at 23,437.41, Xinhua reported. A day later, Hong Kong and mainland Chinese indexes recovered from steep intraday losses, with the Hang Seng extending its gains for a third day, Mint reported. South Korea, Japan and Taiwan moved the other way in a broader technology sell-off.

Regional stocks bounced as Apple’s earnings drew near, and oil prices fell, Reuters reported. The mixed tape left Asia’s recovery fragile at the open.

Mainland runs faster than Hong Kong

The widening gap between the two Chinas is the subplot of the week. The SSE Composite added 1.03% on the same day Hong Kong closed up just 0.47%, 24/7 Wall St. noted. After weeks of fading stimulus hopes, that gap matters for anyone positioning in China exposure. Mainland-listed names are running faster, and Hong Kong’s index is being left behind.

SMA(50) resistance and the 23,500 line

Technically, the index is testing its 50-day simple moving average as resistance inside what chart watchers call a bear-flag pattern, Investing.com reported with live levels. Forecaster Kwok Ka Yiu said the Hang Seng Index may test resistance at 23,500 points and kept an optimistic outlook on Wuxi Apptec (02359.HK). On the Hang Seng Tech sub-index, improving earnings have failed to stop a technical breakdown, StoneX said.

The earlier part of October had been kinder to buyers. The Hang Seng Index rose 1% on October 6 and extended gains for a second day as technology stocks supported sentiment, while rate-sensitive sectors faced pressure and oil prices declined, Mint reported.

Stimulus flows and the India angle

China’s significant stimulus package has boosted liquidity in the Chinese stock market and the banking system, lifting optimism in Asian markets, Mint reported. The Hang Seng Index is up 33% in 21 days on that backdrop. Indian investors can hold the same exposure through the Nippon India ETF Hang Seng BeES (HNGS), which is trading at a 5% premium.

TradingView’s weekly recap added two data points from the same trading week: a quarterly profit that included a $1.4 billion one-off item, and Hong Kong time deposits up 38%.

What to watch

With Monday’s morning close at 23,437.41, the index sits just below the 23,500 resistance Kwok flagged. Apple’s earnings report and falling oil prices are the macro inputs regional traders now have to price. Whether mainland strength pulls Hong Kong’s index along, or the gap keeps widening, is the question on the table this week.
